Reflection:
Slideshow tools allow us to "remix" already existing information on the World Wide Web. By presenting information in a visual manner and formatting it in a new way, it allows the creator to synthesize information, which will lead to better understanding. In this sense, the synthesis of existing information into the user's own terms and structures using these tools will contribute to his/her digital literacy. Students must also understand the severity of using images in their work without properly understanding copyright laws - they are breaking the law and can be persecuted by authorities. Copyright laws restrict the use of others' works in their own creations without their permission. It is very complex, and there are fair dealing laws that allow exceptions to be made. Nonetheless, it is best to be very careful about what we use in our work. Images available to users that can be used without violation of copyright laws with the help of Creative Commons facilitates this creative learning process. These images can often be found on Flickr, the Creative Commons website, or in Google's Advance Search. However, with the privileges come digital responsibility - we must carefully cite the images and other audiovisual material we use. Even though creators allow other users to use their work, it is still illegal to use it without providing proper citations (in most cases). In all, these tools allow us to learn through creativity and synthesis, but as we use these tools as responsible digital citizens, we must abide by the rules that protect individuals' rights.
